Prime Teaching Moments

Prime Teaching Moments

Actually, we think every waking moment for boys at camp is a learning situation for them.  Guys who were homesick a week ago no longer are showing much, if any, separation anxiety.  It is a simple strategy, but not an easy one to execute, when cool counselors persevere with the campers, insisting that they take … Continue reading

Stealth Mania

Stealth Mania

Boys love to play Capture the Flag in the deep woods.  We have adopted rules which reward those who can sneak up on the flag and touch it, rather than steal it and thus have to run pell-mell through the dense forest.  Not a good plan!  Anyway, in 15 seconds last evening, as the teams … Continue reading

This very minute at Kingswood

This very minute at Kingswood

Sunday is reorganization day at Kingswood.  I’ll paste the schedule below.  Keep scrolling to the four photos just taken this very minute.  You can witness our “continental breakfast” going on, with mostly the young boys in early attendance.  The exception is the older boys making sandwiches and packing gear for the three-day hike in the … Continue reading

Reptilian Rapture

Reptilian Rapture

Well, it is only a matter of time until someone is offended by my insistent play-on-word titles to these reports.  Maybe I’ll get away with this one, maybe not.  Our local friend, Gary, runs a reptile rescue service and he easily entertained the juniors for most of the time that the boy reptiles engaged the … Continue reading

Singing in the Rain

Singing in the Rain

Yesterday and today, both, are spitting rain days with widely scattered moderate showers.  Nothing has been cancelled  and I admit to being thrilled with everyone’s fabulous attitude regarding operating as usual despite a tad of minor inconvenience now and again.  Temperatures have something to do with it as just seconds ago I passed y by … Continue reading

Fare at a fair Fair

Fare at a fair Fair

The North Haverhill Fair was fairly good.  When we go at night, we miss most of the agrarian events, such as horse pulls and axe tossing.  But, since the boys go there to eat bad food, the fare at the fair for them was terrific.

Budding New Friendships

Budding New Friendships

Last evening, while pretty, was very windy.  So, we had an indoor council fire session.  I was delighted with the outcome — warm, convivial and entertaining it was.  Also, I was struck by the number of boys who had already started making new friends.  Every photo below reveals campers who did NOT know one another … Continue reading

First Clinics

First Clinics

The morning hours are the most structured part of a Kingswood day.  Boys select three activities — one each for the waterfront, teamsports, and individual choice.  Clinics run from 9:30 to 12:30, with short passing times between the periods.  “Don’t be afraid to fail at Kingswood,” is the clinic mantra, as boys are encouraged to … Continue reading

“POLAR BEAR!!!”

“POLAR BEAR!!!”

My first all-caps headline of the summer.  POLAR BEAR is that raucous start to the day when boys come down to the waterfront at 7:30 sharp to take a brisk plunge into the lake.  “One-third of the camp participated today,” remarked Bill, with glee.  I doubt we’ll sustain that fraction as (a) the weather is … Continue reading

We’re Off!

We’re Off!

What a beautiful day along the shores of Mother Tarleton.  Everyone expected  arrived on time, or even early.  This allowed us to have our opening introduction session much more promptly than in years past.  Several clever skits did a nice job of breaking the ice, and especially when one counselor kicked a soccer ball a … Continue reading
