Boys and Their Counselors

Boys and Their Counselors

I could, and one day likely will, write a book on the significance of the relationship between impressionable kids and their camp counselors.  Done properly, children do not even realize they are being preached to when if fact that is precisely what is happening some of the time. I doubt that numerous pearls of wisdom were … Continue reading

A Return to Normalcy

A Return to Normalcy

Kids like both the breaks in the routine, plus the routine itself.  Come to think of it, kids have it pretty good, eh?  Anyway, yesterday saw a return to the normal rhythms of camp life, and this director, at least, was happy with the outcome.

No-Talent Talent

No-Talent Talent

For a rainy day that was pretty much a washout, we had barrels of laughs.  The heaviest showers came in the morning and program guy  Mike Wiff announced the perfect stall — the No-Talent Talent Show.  Each cabin put on an act, judged by our four-man tribunal (that’s what we call it, sorry) whose hilarious commentaries … Continue reading

A Relaxing Weekend

A Relaxing Weekend

While it is all relative, a “relaxing weekend” to us might translate as “chaos unlimited” to the uninitiated camp parent.  Trust me, then when I tell you we kicked back a tad on Saturday and Sunday.  We give cabin staff time off over the weekends, while at the same time maintaining the same level of … Continue reading

Potpourri Saturday

Potpourri Saturday

Today has  good promise to it.  It is warm, but not oppressive.  Some counselors, on their day off, are hiking, for example.  The kids are participating in a “stations model,” the genius of Mike Wiff.  Boys rotate as a cabin group from one activity to another, covering four venues in a couple hours time.  Most stops … Continue reading

The Egg Drop

The Egg Drop

Last evening we celebrated the 40th Biannual Egg Drop, more accurately an egg smash, as the below pix will attest.  40?  Well,  The “Ambassador From Nowhere to Nowhere” — that’s him in all black — has appeared out of, well, nowhere, for the past 20 summers and he comes with one guarantee:  All eggs in … Continue reading

On the Post Office Wall

On the Post Office Wall

The heat wave came to a crashing end at the approximate dinner hour last evening and our picnic was driven indoors.  Nevertheless, it was another terrific day to be at camp and the program directors scheduled two general swim blocks instead of just one, so that all boys would have a chance to cool off … Continue reading

On the Waterfront

On the Waterfront

On the Waterfront, Wet & Wonderful, Cool and Loving it:  These were blog titles I considered for today’s post.  Even the Mt. Chocorua hiking trip found water at Champney Falls while descending the climb.  “The boys were shocked at how cold that water felt after the long, hot trek,” concluded trip leader, Scott. The heat … Continue reading

An Awesome Day

An Awesome Day

Sunny, 80 degrees, low humidity and little wind:  That, folks, is the perfect recipe for an awesome day at camp.  Coming as these conditions did on the first day of the session makes it even more serendipitous.  Here is the skinny:

A Laughing Start

A Laughing Start

I really pray for good weather for the opening days of camp sessions.  Kingswood must not have too many sinners as the past several days have been spectacular.  I had to remind boys at breakfast this morning to wear sun block, drink plenty of fluids and wash those hands at each meal.  “Do these three … Continue reading
